We are proud of the Careers provision we offer here at Henry’s. Careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) is an essential part of the support we offer, helping our young people prepare for the opportunities, responsibility and experiences of life.
Careers Adviser
Mrs Sally Pike, our fully qualified and experienced Careers Adviser, works very closely with the Heads of Year to produce interesting and relevant careers lessons for all year groups. Form Tutors deliver these lessons, which form part of the PSHE Programme, and give each pupil the opportunity to begin to develop a curiosity for the world beyond the school walls, a journey that builds from Year 7 right through to Sixth Form.
Careers Guidance
Careers Meetings are available on request for all pupils (and their parents) from Year 7 onwards.
These meetings help pupils discuss careers and future aspirations honestly and openly and to enable them to make their own decisions and take appropriate actions.
There is a planned programme of guidance interviews for pupils in Year 11 reflecting the important decisions they will have to make. Each pupil meets with Mrs Pike to discuss, explore and develop their career plans.
Sixth Form students are all urged to book a meeting, and sometimes a tutor might refer them, to consider their post 18 options at any time during their sixth form studies.
Careers Information
The Careers Room, open every lunchtime, offers a wide range of career and education resources. It includes university prospectuses, UCAS advice, Gap Year opportunities, student funding, scholarships and graduate destinations.
There’s also a section on Degree Apprenticeships, local and national opportunities, and articles on Higher Education and job market trends. Pupils can find resources on job applications, CVs, interviews and study/work abroad.
The Spartan Test and useful career websites are accessible on the School network and Intranet.
Careers Events – Years 7 – 10
Here is a taster of some of the careers events we offer throughout the year:
- Year 7 – pupils have the chance to “interview” visitors about their careers. After a preparation lesson on effective questioning, they meet three visitors to ask about career choices and motivations. This fun activity aims to spark curiosity about future career possibilities.
- Year 8 – take part in a “what’s my line” careers lesson, where they meet visitors, and have to guess their occupation by asking a series of pre-prepared questions – always a fun and interesting session.
- Year 9 – meet Mrs. Pike in an assembly about choosing GCSE subjects and parents are introduced to her at an Options Parents Evening.
- Year 10 – a careers forum is run annually where outside experts deliver careers talks.
Sixth Form Careers
- Lower Sixth – attend the “University and Apprenticeship Search” in Leicester to meet university tutors, degree apprenticeship employers and gap year providers.
- In June, a Higher Education Day invites admissions tutors from various universities to offer advice on writing UCAS Personal Statements.
- Work Experience is supported for Lower Sixth students, help with letters and CVs, and possible contacts to try to arrange a placement in the school holidays.
- Upper Sixth participate in various events, including PSHE lessons by a senior HR manager on acing competency-based interviews, followed by a Speed Interview Morning with visitors or the Senior Leadership Team.
- There’s a Mock Interview Evening for Oxbridge applicants and a Mock Multiple Mini Interview Evening for Medics, Dentists, Vets and Pharmacists.
- Students applying for Degree Apprenticeships go to the National Apprenticeship Show.
Applying to Oxbridge
The school has a strong record of Oxbridge success in recent years and our Oxbridge Coordinator, form tutors and subject teachers all support students through the process of applying to Oxford and Cambridge through coaching and administering entrance tests.
We encourage students to start thinking about a possible Oxbridge application as early as Year 10, by getting them to focus on expanding their knowledge beyond the GCSE and then the A Level syllabus.
In Sixth Form, we begin to go into much more detail about the application and selection procedure, ensuring that students are well informed and realistic in their applications. When students begin their final year, we work intensively with them on their UCAS application, on their references and focus on preparing for the interview by arranging extra practice.
