Year 7 Pupils Take on Climbing and Orienteering Challenges
Over the past few weeks, Year 7 pupils at King Henry VIII School have been embracing the great outdoors and testing their physical and mental strength in their climbing and orienteering lessons. These sessions have provided the pupils with an exciting opportunity to develop problem-solving skills, resilience, and teamwork, all while having a fantastic time exploring new activities.
The climbing unit has seen pupils work on low-level traversing, focusing on balance, footwork and grip strength. Many pupils have risen to the challenge, showing determination and perseverance in their attempts to improve their technique. Notably, Jayden and Olivia demonstrated outstanding ability, successfully clearing Challenge 1 and coming incredibly close to completing Challenge 2. Their focus, grit and willingness to push themselves have been inspiring for their peers and their progress has been fantastic to watch.
Alongside climbing, the pupils have also been developing navigation skills through orienteering, working in teams to map routes, follow directions and complete set challenges around the school grounds. The activity has encouraged strategic thinking, communication and leadership, with pupils learning to adapt and problem-solve under pressure.
Director of Sport Mr. Fitt praised the pupils’ efforts, saying:
“Climbing and orienteering are fantastic ways for pupils to develop physical confidence, resilience and teamwork. It’s been brilliant to see them supporting each other, taking on challenges and growing in confidence each week. The determination shown by Jayden, Olivia and so many others has been outstanding!”

With pupils continuing to progress in these activities, it’s clear that their enthusiasm and perseverance will take them far – not just in sport, but in all aspects of school life.
Well done, Year 7!
