Senior School life - King Henry VIII School

SENIOR SCHOOL LIFE

At King Henry’s, we place the wellbeing and personal development of every pupil at the heart of the Senior School experience. We believe these are essential foundations for academic success and for preparing our young people for life beyond the classroom.

Henry’s Values

At King Henry VIII School, our shared values underpin every aspect of school life.

We promote Respect by encouraging pupils to take pride in their school, care for their environment, treat others with kindness and wear their uniform with pride.

We foster a culture of Learning by expecting pupils to be punctual, engaged, organised and committed to doing their best.

Finally, we prioritise Wellbeing, supporting pupils to lead balanced lives, seek help when needed and make the most of the wide range of opportunities available to them beyond the classroom.

Years 7 8

Form Tutors

Our Form Tutors are central to the care and support we provide. As consistent figures throughout a pupil’s school journey, they offer tailored guidance, monitor academic progress and help pupils set meaningful goals.

They provide a safe and supportive space for pupils to talk through any concerns – ensuring every individual feels seen, heard and valued.

The Pastoral Hub
A calm and supportive space

The Pastoral Hub is a dedicated, welcoming area where pupils can access additional support in a calm, discreet environment.

Whether pupils need a quiet moment of reflection, a listening ear or support from our caring Pastoral Administrator, the Hub is always available as a place of reassurance and calm.

SEND
Supporting individual needs

Our approach to Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) is rooted in the belief that every pupil deserves the opportunity to thrive.

Our specialist SEND team, comprising five dedicated staff – provides personalised support inside and outside the classroom. This may include one-to-one sessions, small group work and regular interventions tailored to each pupil’s needs. We also run a weekly autism support group, helping to create a safe and inclusive environment where every learner is empowered to achieve their full potential.

The House System
Fun and friendly competition

Every pupil at King Henry’s is assigned to one of four Houses upon joining the school, a bond that remains with them throughout their school journey. The House System is a vibrant part of life at King Henry VIII School, fostering a sense of belonging, teamwork and healthy competition.

Houses take part in a wide variety of activities across the year, from sports such as football, netball, swimming, squash and athletics, to darts, debating, reading, music, drama, cookery, art and much more. House events are fun, inclusive and designed to allow all pupils to contribute, shine and support one another.

School trips and excursions
Exploring the world

Our wide-ranging programme of school trips extends learning far beyond the classroom. These include subject-based visits, cultural excursions to museums and theatres, university visits and international sports and cultural tours.

A particular highlight is the Year 7 residential trip to PGL during the October half term – a fantastic opportunity for pupils to bond, build confidence and begin their Senior School journey with lasting memories.

“Pupils of all ages commented how leadership opportunities such as being a house year group captain or anti-bullying ambassador, can help them to know themselves better and to overcome any self doubts.”

Parental partnership
School reports and parents’ evenings

We believe that close collaboration between school and home is vital to pupil success. Parents receive regular written reports and are invited to at least two parents’ evenings each academic year.

We encourage ongoing communication and welcome parents to contact Form Tutors whenever needed – working together to ensure that every pupil receives the guidance and support they deserve.

Peer Support
Pupils helping pupils

Our Peer Support team offer a valuable layer of emotional support within the school community.

Specially trained and approachable, they are available daily before school and at lunchtimes to listen, offer reassurance and help fellow pupils consider positive ways to face challenges – whether academic, social or personal.
