At King Henry’s education extends far beyond the classroom. Our rich co-curricular programme offers every pupil the chance to explore new interests, develop fresh talents and grow in confidence. From sport and performing arts to clubs, leadership and adventurous expeditions, we believe that learning through experience plays a vital role in shaping well-rounded, capable young people.
Our pupils flourish in an environment where challenge, creativity and curiosity are actively encouraged – developing independence, collaboration and a lifelong love of learning.
Sport
Opportunity, Participation and Excellence
Sport plays an important role in school life at King Henry’s. All pupils take part in regular PE and Games sessions, with a full calendar of competitive fixtures throughout the year.
Our experienced staff and specialist coaches support every pupil to reach their personal best, whether they’re trying a new sport for the first time or competing at county, regional or national level.
In the winter months, the focus is on rugby, netball and hockey. During the summer, pupils enjoy cricket, athletics, rounders and cross country. House matches are held throughout the year, giving pupils of all abilities the chance to take part and contribute to their House’s success.
“Pupils enjoy busy and successful lives beyond the classroom and this represents a successful fulfilment of the school’s aims to encourage each pupil to discover and develop their talents.”

Performing Arts
Inspiring Creativity and Confidence
The Performing Arts are a vibrant part of life at King Henry’s, providing pupils with opportunities to express themselves, build confidence and work collaboratively.
Drama
Drama plays a central role as pupils in Years 7 to 9 receive regular drama lessons to develop key communication and performance skills. As pupils progress, they are invited to take on more ambitious roles, on stage and behind the scenes. Recent performances have included Legally Blonde the Musical, Hairspray and original pupil-led works.
Extra-Curricular Drama is a vibrant and much-loved aspect of school life. Each academic year features two major productions which alternate between plays and musicals, with the musicals created in collaboration with the Music department. Whether performing, directing, designing or working backstage, pupils play an active role in producing high-quality performances enjoyed by the wider school community.
Music
Music is woven throughout school life, from classroom learning in Years 7 to 9 to ensemble performances and individual tuition. Pupils are encouraged to explore a variety of musical styles using voice, instruments or digital composition.
There are regular opportunities to perform at school concerts, charity events and services. Pupils can join a range of ensembles, orchestras and choirs.
Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
Challenge and Growth
We are proud to offer the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels. This nationally recognised programme encourages pupils to push themselves, develop resilience and gain life-enhancing skills.

- Expedition
- Residential (Gold only)
Participation is encouraged across the school, with staff supporting pupils through their journey, from planning their expeditions to achieving their final award.
Visits and Trips
Expanding Horizons
Educational visits and school trips are a valued part of life at King Henry’s. They bring learning to life, build independence and create memories that last a lifetime.
We run a broad and exciting programme of local, national and international trips, including:
- Academic fieldwork in the UK
- Cultural trips to Europe
- Skiing adventures in Austria
- Sports tours to destinations such as South Africa
- Language exchanges
- Music tours to destinations such as Venice and Budapest
- University visits and theatre trips
These experiences enrich our curriculum and give pupils the chance to explore the world beyond the classroom.
Charity
Community Involvment
At King Henry’s, giving back is an important part of school life. Each year, pupils and staff raise funds for a range of causes, including national campaigns such as Macmillan Cancer Support, The Poppy Appeal and Red Nose Day.
Charitable events are often initiated and organised by Houses, year groups, form groups or individual pupils. Activities range from cake sales and non-uniform days to sponsored challenges and awareness campaigns.
We also respond to major global appeals – such as support for the Nepal earthquake – as well as supporting local charities such as Myton Hospice. Through these efforts, our school community demonstrates compassion, leadership and a strong commitment to making a positive difference.
Outdoor Education
Pupils enjoy a wide range of outdoor and adventure opportunities. In Year 7, they take part in the Adventure Challenge Award, a Bushcraft Residential and an Outdoor Adventure and Orienteering Club. By Year 9, they tackle the three-day Sandstone Trail Expedition before progressing to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Pupils can also gain the John Muir Award, focusing on wild place exploration, conservation and sharing experiences, alongside skills in bushcraft, survival, navigation and first aid.
International expeditions offer “once in a lifetime” challenges in destinations such as Borneo, Peru and South Africa, involving community projects, trekking and wildlife experiences. Closer to home, pupils can take part in the NICAS Climbing and Bouldering schemes, supported by our own indoor climbing wall, which allows them to develop their skills in a safe and accessible environment. Designed for ages seven and up, these schemes enable progression from novice to advanced climbers, with King Henry’s delivering Levels 1 and 2. The awards recognise skills in climbing movement, rope-work, equipment use, safety, teamwork and the history of the sport.
