Pre-Prep: Outside the Classroom - King Henry VIII School

Outside the Classroom

Outdoor learning is a valued and integral part of our curriculum. All children have access to covered learning spaces and our beautiful school grounds, which are regularly used to enhance teaching and support children’s personal development.

We promote mindfulness, curiosity and environmental awareness through outdoor activities. Children are encouraged to observe nature, reflect and engage in discussions around sustainability, recycling and their responsibility for the world around them.

Physical Education

Physical activity is an essential part of life at King Henry VIII Pre-Prep. We aim to instil a lifelong love of sport and movement by offering a wide range of activities that develop key physical skills, teamwork and resilience.

PE is taught by both class teachers and specialist sports staff, and includes fitness sessions, fundamental skills development and team games. Children participate in structured lessons that promote coordination, balance and cooperation.

Swimming

Our on-site swimming pool allows us to offer high-quality swimming lessons throughout the year.

  • Reception swim weekly during the Spring Term and the first half of the Summer Term.
  • Year 1 swim weekly during the Autumn Term and the second half of the Summer Term.

These lessons build water confidence, develop swimming techniques and teach important safety skills in a fun and supportive environment.

Forest School

Forest School is a much-loved feature of life here, offering children regular opportunities to connect with nature in our extensive woodland and outdoor areas. Led by a qualified Forest School Leader, sessions run throughout the year and support both planned learning outcomes and child-led exploration.

Children take part in a wide range of outdoor activities such as whittling, den building, woodland crafts, nature investigations, problem-solving and team-building exercises. They also learn to make and safely manage small fires, often finishing with a shared moment of hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows.

Forest School helps children build confidence, independence and a deep appreciation for the natural world – providing experiences that support emotional wellbeing, resilience and holistic development.
