King Henry VIII School Relay Race 2025
Muddy Runners fill Coventry’s War Memorial Park for the King Henry VIII School Relay Race
The 53rd annual King Henry VIII School Relay Race, held on Wednesday 29 January 2025 in Coventry’s War Memorial Park, delivered another thrilling day of cross-country action. With 52 boys’ teams and a record 42 girls’ teams competing, the event celebrated not only the rich history of the boys’ race but also the 25th anniversary of the girls’ race, marking a quarter-century of inspiring performances.
In the girls’ race, New Hall School, Essex, won comfortably with a total time of 54:29 – the fourth fastest time in the race’s history. The boys race rang in the changes with Ermysted’s Grammar School, North Yorkshire, emerging victorious just 18 seconds ahead of The Judd School – who now end their four-year winning streak.
King Henry’s Seniors fielded Dougie Garnett, who at 12:20 ran a top 10% time, and helped King Henry’s come in above local schools Rugby and Warwick.
I was very proud of the school for the event, which was marshalled by Year 11 and 12 pupils – as well as many staff, who all braved the cold and mud!
This year’s VIP guest, Seyi Olofinjana, former Premier League footballer and current Chelsea FC African Talent Scout, added a touch of star power to the event. During the prize-giving ceremony, Seyi emphasized the importance of running in all sports, stating, “Running is the foundation of athletic performance, whether you’re on the pitch or the track. It builds endurance, discipline and mental toughness.” His words resonated with the young athletes, many of whom aspire to balance sport and academics at the highest level.
