Bablake & King Henry VIII School ‘bowled over’ by the MCC
Wednesday 23 June saw the first official BKHS sports team of 2021. The fixture has been played for many years across both school sites, where a joint team has competed against the prestigious and very talented Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).
The weather and setting was perfect and the performances from the BKHS team certainly did not disappoint, bowling first spinners Bennett (KHVIII) 2-42 and Wragg (BS) 1-92 did well to control the aggressive Naylor and Phillips. The MCC posted a strong 266-3 on a beautiful batting surface.
After spending the morning in the field, the heat had an early impact as BKHS lost 2 big wickets in the first over from some terrific bowling from Turney. However, the innings was stabilised through Cullinane (72/BS) and Wragg (24/BS). The experience of the senior MCC players was clearly evident and unfortunately BKHS found it tough against Langman, Lamb and Wolstenholme. The home team were dismissed for 137 with the tail really struggling against 2 very talented bowlers.
The day was a fantastic one for all involved and the spirit from both team showed what we have all been missing during the periods of lockdown and limited school sport.
